When opening packages from under the tree, I always feel a twinge of joy when the item is local or will be used in my kitchen.

Local products from Blue Hill Farm

Some of my favorite gifts this year included these wonderful local products purchased from the Farm Shop located on the corner of Lexington and Ashland. The jams and chutneys are fine local foods that come from Blue Hill Farms in East Otto, New York. They use the very finest and freshest ingredients and are so delicious.

Misto

One of my other favorites this year is a Misto sprayer. You simply fill it half way with olive oil and use it as you would a “Pam” product. However, there are no aerosol or chemical propellants so it’s much cleaner. It’s so easy to use and provides a great flavor to your cooking. A must have for the health-conscious cook. Misto will save money in the long run too because you aren’t buying several of those aerosol cans every year and throwing them away.

Moriarty’s Mustard

And if you love mustard like I love mustard, you have to try the Moriarty’s brand. I believe this local mustard from Ellicottville, NY was also purchased from the Farm Shop. It’s the perfect blend of spices and I love it on salmon or as a dip for veggies or crackers. Once you taste it, I guarentee you will think of many other foods you can deliciously pair it with.

Flexible Cutting Mats

Finally, the flexible cutting mats are the cleanest way to cut veggies, fruits and other foods. They have antimicrobial protection built-in to the cutting mat to help prevent the growth of  bacteria. You can throw them in the dishwasher and they are much safer and better to use than plastic. After chopping food, you curve the flexible mat and just scoop the food into the pot or bowl you are using. Safe, healthy, and easy, as well as fairly inexpensive.

So, it’s not raindrops on roses or crisp apple strudels that are my favorite things. These local food items, flexible cutting mats and Misto are at the top of my list this year. These items make my life a little easier, safer and more enjoyable.
